Journey deep into the tropical jungle to see the mystic rites of the Bainings Fire Dancers or the magic Tolai Duk-Duks dressed in their suits of leaves. The Gazelle Peninsula is the home of the Tolai people, original inhabitants of the area.
Bitapaka War Cemetery
From this underground command post, General Yamamoto directed the Japanese assault on to mainland Papua New Guinea culminating in the Battle of the Coral Sea. This decisive naval and air engagement halted the Japanese surge in the South Pacific and to mainland Australia.
Tolai Dancers
A beautiful and tranquil setting where lie buried the servicemen from many allied forces who sacrificed their young lives in World War II. Maintained by the Australian War Graves Commission it is a fitting memorial honouring the fallen.
Over 700 km of underground tunnels honeycomb the cliffs and hills around Rabaul’s Simpson Harbour. The Japanese forces, in a vain endeavour to hide from Australian, NZ and American bombers, built hospitals, barge bays and accommodation galleries within this complex.
